Cushion shrubs encroach subhumid rangelands and form fertility islands along a grazing gradient in Patagonia

We assessed changes in soils and vegetation associated with different plant life forms increasing grazing intensity (GI) a subhumid grassland of Patagonia (Argentina), vast portions these grass steppes degraded states. reconstructed the historic GI gradient study sites characterised cover. sampled soil beneath patches shrub their bare interspaces, as well height hummocks thickness superficial horizons. used multivariate analysis, inferential tests, simple regressions relative interaction index to measure effect historical rangelands. The interspaces between shrubs was most degraded, particle fertility losses. While did not differ any fraction, far more fertile. cushion developed typical spatial heterogeneity island effect, decreased GI. With GI, cover grew total decreased, while percentage increased. favoured transition this shrubland. Grazing an exogenous factor triggers processes change degradation, which lead encroachment by Mulinum spinosum development. This self-reinforced degradation process, documented arid semiarid environments, also occurs rangelands forest-steppe ecotone.
